Quality Shoes for People with Plantar Fasciitis

People who suffer from plantar fasciitis know that the condition can be excruciatingly painful and that there is little they can do to alleviate that pain besides resting and icing their feet.  Supportive footwear can play a major role when it comes to alleviating pain, but just any old athletic shoe won’t do.  People with plantar fasciitis should invest in shoes that provide significant orthopedic support.  In particular, shoes should have considerable arch support and at least a 1 inch heel.  Look below for some more specific recommendations.

Dansko Professional Clogs.  These backless shoes have excellent shock absorption and first-rate arch support.  A rocker bottom ensures that you will be steady on your feet while a slightly elevated heel provides relief from heel pain.

Merrell Encore.  Merrell shoes are known for their topnotch footwear technology and these high-tech clogs are no exception.  With “air cushion” midsoles, Q-Form® footbed and Trailspring® support system, you can rest assured that you are benefiting from some of the latest innovations out there.

Z-Coil Shoes.  Z-Coil shoes have a brand new take on heel support.  Instead of the normal heel, Z-Coil shoes sport a partially exposed spring.  The makers of Z-Coil claim that these shoes provide 200 percent more cushioning than regular running or walking shoes.  In addition to the spring heel, they also contain built-in orthotics.  The shoes, which were originally designed by runners for runners, have recently been popular among plantar fasciitis patients.  (If you’re turned off by the exposed spring, you can sometimes find versions of the shoe where the spring is covered).

Spira Shoes. These shoes also use the coiled spring as a cushioning device, but unlike Z-Coil Shoes, Spira shoes conceal the spring within the sole.

New Balance.  New Balance is well respected for its foot-friendly orthopedic footwear.  They design several athletic shoes that are reportedly good for people suffering from plantar fasciitis.  Check out New Balance Motion Control numbers 845, 926 and 811.  In general, New Balance says that plantar fasciitis patients should look for shoes with a “soft heel and a significant arch”.  They also recommend New Balance pressure relief inserts.

Birkenstocks.  With their unique cork sole, Birkenstocks are high-quality sandals that will mold to your feet and give them the support they need.  They are a great alternative for people with plantar fasciitis who can no longer wear the usual flat-soled sandals that offer zero support.  Not only will Birkenstocks elevate your heel, they are also designed with a heel cup, which will cushion your heel while keeping it securely in place.
